Home School Busses for Sports
All students must have an Activities Card on file with the Student Activities Coordinator before they may stay after school. Clubs and activities begin on September 21st. Please check the list below for the specific day of the club you are interested in. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Joyner, Student Activities Coordinator, at 648-4671.
All students must have a current VBMSL physical on file at their neighborhood school BEFORE trying out for MSL athletic teams. Please make sure you use this form, it has been updated and older versions will NOT be accepted!
Clubs and Sponsors
Chess Club
Sponsor: Ms. Aitchison
Back by popular demand! Learn, practice, play, compete against other schools, and just have fun while enjoying the timeless game of chess. No experience necessary. The chess club will meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month in room 307.
Computer Club
Sponsor: Ms. Li
Come learn more about the true workings of computers. We’ll have tons of fun as we explore new programs and develop web pages. The computer club will also prepare for the Great Computer Challenge in the spring. The Computer club will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month.
Birding Club
Sponsor: Mr. Reid
A new club for 2009-2010! In this club we will: learn bird identification basics, involving physical description and preferred habitat, visit the natural area behind the school to gain an understanding of which birds are resident and which are migratory, learn about birding
equipment and the latest trends in technology as they relate to birding. This club will meet
primarily in the fall and spring migrating seasons. There is a limit of 15 members, and
binoculars are required for the club. If you are interested in joining, please attend the
informational meeting on Thursday, September 24th in lab 103. See Mr. Reid for additional
information.
Destination Imagination
Sponsor: Ms. Kilczewski
Learn teamwork & communication skills as you work with a six-person team to complete one of five challenges requiring creativity in technology, construction, theatrics, improvisation or a combination of all of these. Teams will meet on Tuesdays beginning September 30, and on Wednesdays in room 403 starting in November.
Drama Club
Sponsor: Mr. Fitzgerald
Drama Club is open to all students at KLMS The club sponsors four performances each year in conjunction with the Junior Thespian troupe. This year plans are for a talent show, a Winter Production, a one-act festival show, and a dinner theatre. Club meetings will focus on the organization of these events and will also feature workshops in areas of theatre expertise like makeup, stage combat, set construction, etc. Meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month and are held in the drama portable.
Forensics

Do you enjoy poetry, prose, spelling, writing, persuasive speeches and speaking in front of people? You may be wondering what that has to do with Forensics. Forensics is a competitive speaking sport where members compete against other schools. There are nine categories from which to choose. Please see Mrs. Kennedy or Mr. Bone for more information.
FUEL
Sponsor: Ms. Novak
FUEL is the KLMS creative arts magazine. Staff members encourage students to submit their written (prose, poetry, lyric) and artistic (fine art, graphic art, cartoon) entries for the annual edition of the magazine. After selecting those pieces they feel most reflective of
KLMS, the staff members edit and produce the final copy. FUEL meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month in the fall, and more often in the spring before the publication deadline, in room 404.
Helping Hands
Sponsors: Mrs. Jaglowski
“Helping Hands” is a group that involves students working in the community with people in need. Successful past projects have been collecting & distributing “Coats For Kids” with EVMS, collecting food for Thanksgiving dinners, making children’s holiday stockings for the Salvation Army, collecting toiletries to help the local homeless shelters and collecting
junk food for the children of Hope Haven. If you have other ideas and want to help others,
join us on October 11th after school in Health Portable. We will meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month.
Intramural Sports
Sponsors: Mrs. Jaglowski & Ms. Joyner
Intramural Sports will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays in the gym. Intramural Sports are open to all grade levels and students can attend as frequently (or infrequently) as they desire. Sports are often determined by the students who attend. Organized tournaments will be announced for flag football in the fall, dodge ball and basketball in the winter.
Math Counts
Sponsor: Mrs. Saul
Math Counts will begin as a club/group of students in grades 6-8 who enjoy solving a variety of math problems. An in-school competition will be held late first semester. One team of four and four additional individuals will be selected (based on the in-school competition results) to represent KLMS in the February regional competition. Practices for this competition will be scheduled based on team member availability. The coach may adjust the team as needed to insure good attitude and responsible behavior. Club meetings will resume as usual following the competitions. Meetings will take place on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month in room 204.
Newspaper
Sponsor: Mrs. Poe
Members of the newspaper club, “The Phoenix Inferno,” will help to create, design, write
articles and publish the student-centered paper. Anyone who enjoys computers, creative
writing, technical writing, or art is invited to be part of the Newspaper Staff. The club
will publish one newspaper each nine weeks and will meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.
NJHS
Sponsors: Mrs. Baxter & Ms. Foshay
Any 7th or 8th grade student interested in applying to NJHS may pick up an information
packet beginning in March. The induction ceremony will take place in April for selected members. Those members inducted into the society will meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month in the cafeteria.
SCA
Sponsor: Mrs. Patterson & Mrs. Thiesfeld
The Student Council Association is the student government group at KLMS. They sponsor
several school dances throughout the year, organize the student part of the United Way und drive each October, and plan 4 separate Spirit Weeks during the year. Heavily involved in Community Service, they plan and carry out a number of such projects each year. They fundraise to create academic scholarships for former KLMS students graduating from VB high schools and to beautify the school and the premises.
The SCA executive council, made up of elected officers and officer candidates, meets the 1st Thursday of each month in room 303, and the SCA Focus representative meetings, occur on the 3rd Thursday of each month in the cafeteria.
Thespians
Sponsor: Mr. Fitzgerald
The Thespian Society is represented by Troupe 88337 at KLMS. Membership in Junior thespians is through achievement and involvement in theatre at KLMS. Any student who as accumulated ten points in theatre credits at KLMS is eligible for membership. The initiation ceremony will be held in the spring, and dues are $5.25 annually. Thespians meet the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the drama portable.

Trailblazers Geography Club
Sponsor: Mr. Woody
The Trailblazers Club provides students with opportunities to explore the subjects of
geography, history, and current events. The club engages in competitive games and other
activities to help 6th and 7th graders prepare for the school’s Geographic Bee, the first
step in the National Geographic Bee program. This club meets on Thursdays in room 310.
Yearbook
Sponsor: Mrs. Bruce
Yearbook members have the privilege to visually and verbally record the school’s year.
Members create layout spreads, write captions and copy, take and crop pictures and work as a team. Computers play a large role in the production of the yearbook. All members have the opportunity to create portions of the yearbook using Jostens website, yearbookavenue.com where they will interact with their virtual yearbook.

additional meeting will be scheduled as needed.
Academic Sports
Debate, begins August 31
Sponsor: Ms. Dausel
Debate is an interscholastic activity in which students compete on two two-person teams. The debate season runs from September through October, and the team practices Monday through Thursday during Debate season. Students interested in trying out for the Debate Team should attend the Debate Club meetings during the first three weeks of school or see the club sponsor, activity buses will be available. The Debate Team tryouts are in September.
Academic Challenge, begins November 16
Sponsor: Mr. Bone
This is.........Jeopardy. Well, it’s not Jeopardy, but you have to think fast and act even faster. Tryout for the KLMS Academic Challenge team and compete against other middle
schools in a battle of wits. Tryouts will be held during Focus the first week of the second
grading period. Spaces are limited on the team, and students must meet the city’s academic eligibility requirements. Members will be required to attend after-school practices every Monday and matches Monday, Wednesday, or Thursdays during the Academic Challenge season, which runs for the second nine weeks only. Practice is in room 308.
One Act Play, begins January 19

Interscholastic Sports
In order to participate in the interscholastic sports program at their neighborhood school, students MUST have a Middle School League physical form on file with the Student Activities Coordinator, Ms. Joyner, at KLMS. Physical forms are available on the activities section of the KLMS website!
